Senator Antonio “Sonny” F. Trillanes IV has filed his certificate of candidacy on Wednesday, October 14, to formalize his vice presidential bid in the 2016 elections.
Trillanes said that by running to higher office, he seeks to make greater impact in providing direct services to the Filipino people, and as well as in improving the country’s peace and order, which has been a serious concern in the past.
Trillanes, a staunch anti-corruption advocate, is known for his prominent role in the in the uprisings directed against the oppressive Arroyo regime which put him in jail for 7½ years. In 2007, he successfully launched a nationwide campaign from his prison cell as he ran and won a seat in the Philippine Senate on a shoestring budget. He is now on his second term as a legislator.
Under Trillanes’ program of government, he envisions a country of peace, progress and prosperity under a regime of social justice with a united, responsible and empowered citizenry, anchored on the following primary advocacies: Peace and Order; Anti-Corruption and Governance Reforms; Poverty Alleviation; Education; Economic Development; Environment; Health; Justice; Foreign Policy; Science and Technology; Sports; and Urban Development
In the recently concluded Magdalo Convention, Representative Gary Alejano expressed Magdalo’s support of Trillanes’ bid. According to him, “Eight years since Sen. Trillanes has started serving as a senator, he has made numerous accomplishments through his legislative measures and development projects. The group believes that he can now better serve the country through higher office.”
Trillanes reiterated that more than an individual decision, running for vice president is a collective decision of the group. “This is an opportunity to once again present the Magdalo reform agenda to the people and raise our brand of service to the next level. There will be no let up in our fight against corruption,” said Trillanes.
Trillanes, joined by his supporters, led a motorcade from Pasay City to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Main Office in Intramuros, Manila during the scheduled filing of his candidacy.#
